Have you heard of University Park, Texas? It’s a lovely city located just east of Dallas Love Field Airport. The locals there sure know how to enjoy good food and good company. So, I was excited when I got a notification from my Nextdoor app about a new bakery and coffee shop in the area.
This Park Cities bakery, owned by mother/daughter duo Alison and Ashley Sage Weinstein, is also a coffee shop — which makes it perfect for those days one needs a little something extra with their cuppa. It’s got a little wonderland of an outdoor area to sip in. And it roasts with beans from Dallas’s own Noble Coyote Coffee Roasters.
Dallas mother and daughter Alison and Ashley Sage Weinstein along with chef Jill Bates are serving up a curated selection of lovely bakery bites in this University Park spot. The name gives away the flavor profile: the sweets are not too sweet, like the cruffin brioche which combines a croissant and a muffin for a substantial bite that has the savory butter of a croissant and is often sprinkled with hard sugars and cinnamons to create an out-of-the-ordinary breakfast. It also offers a robust selection of cupcakes, cookies, and brownies in flavors that frequently change with the seasons.
Sophisticated yet approachable. That’s what Alison Weinstein and executive chef Jill Bates aimed for when they created Sugar & Sage Bakery. The neighborhood patisserie bakes all of its confections in-house, including team favorites like cinnamon “cruffin” brioche feuillette, apricot verbena danish and a mushroom focaccia.

Order a cup of Noble Coyote Coffee, a sweet treat or a sandwich, and dig into that pile of work in this Highland Park bakery. The well-appointed interiors are second only to the lovely outdoor patio.
Since opening at 4314 Lovers Lane across from Highland Park High School this spring, Sugar and Sage Bakery has gotten involved by supporting the first pep rally of the fall season and become a hot spot for athletics meetings.

Chef Jill Bates, once the right hand of culinary legend Dean Fearing, has one goal these days: the creation of the perfect croissant. The six dozen she sells out of by 3 pm on any given Saturday should be proof she’s on the right track. Still, the pastry savant is up at 4 am, kneading, rolling, and laminating dough for the early-morning crowd at Sugar & Sage on Dallas’ Lovers Lane.
